“The Valley of Vengeful Ghosts” is a creepy, modern gothic tale of a grieving daughter spiraling into madness against the backdrop of ecological destruction and unending rain.
Eleanor wants to fulfill her recently deceased mother’s directives and the last one is to buy a house. With the inheritance her mother left, Eleanor is able to afford an as-is model home in a bankrupt, unfinished development. The previous developer clearcut a lush forest to make way for the development and, as the rains come, water and flooding become a major element.
Alone in the empty valley and questioning many of the decisions that have led her here, Eleanor starts seeing ghosts. As the story progresses the gothic atmosphere and Eleanor’s increasing unreliability as narrator, plunges readers into a fascinating study of grieving, growing up, and the guilt we all carry.
I enjoyed the unsettling feel of this story and could relate to Eleanor’s feelings of bewilderment and guilt as she tries to navigate her new life. If you’re a fan of creepy ghost stories and gothic atmosphere, give this one a try! “The Valley of Vengeful Ghosts” released on March 3, 2026.
TW: suicide, mention of sexual assault, death of a parent
